Our Next Step Story
Next Step Roofing & Contracting was created through the partnership of Jose M. Jimenez and Eddie Sua. The last few years have been eye opening and rewarding for both of them. Both of them have a desire to have a positive impact in our communities and the lives of others.
They opened a non-profit Next Step Foundation and have built a great company dedicated to service not only in their construction jobs, but also in the community. A portion of all their proceeds go to the non-profit to support people in need and the community in general. Jose & Eddie have the same desire to support the community, as well as our crew, performing the best job they can exceeding the expectation of their clients.
Jose was a previous owner of Akamai Roofing Inc. and Eddie was one of their key employees. Their work at Akamai Roofing Inc., really helped them to see what they could build together and their desire to provide people with great workmanship and aloha instead of punch lines.
Recently opened since June 1, 2024, they are building a company that supports previously incarcerated individuals, with or without work experience. Once people are released from prison, they go through an interview process with previously incarcerated individuals to guide them through the process of personal & professional growth. For individuals who qualify and or we feel are the right fit. We train and provide these great men and women with marketable skills, such as roofing, carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, landscaping, administrative tasks, computer skills, warehouse management, Project Management, heavy equipment use, Quality Control & Osha training and certification, and more. They strive as a company to help individuals, gain confidence through learning a trade, and using that skill to truly serve clients and feel the satisfaction of their gratefulness, as well as feeling the gratefulness of the people we do free handyman work for, that otherwise they would not be able to afford it, community clean up, or whatever it may be.
Next Step is not just a job but a lifestyle of service. We all continue to strive to be a construction company that does more than just construction, but a company that stands for something greater than all of us, and just change lives. All our employees in the program are required to volunteer at both Next Step Roofing & Contracting, and our (501c3) Next Step Foundation. The feeling of being able to help someone, and receiving their gratitude is one of the most powerful feelings of satisfaction a person can have.

I currently hold a degree in accounting and have been in jobs requiring financial knowledge since I finished college. From working in accounting at Nissan, assisting financial advisors build their businesses, non-profits, volunteer work and the like. I bring my accounting skills and passion to help others to Next Step Roofing & Contracting. I love working for this company because I can see for most of us here it’s not just a job, it’s family. My name is Eddie Sua, and I am a proud owner of Next Step Roofing & Contracting LLC, a roofing company based in Waipahu. We specialize in residential and commercial roofing solutions, providing quality service to our community.
Growing up in a low-income neighborhood, I faced numerous challenges that tested my resilience. My family struggled to make ends meet, which instilled in me a strong work ethic from an early age. I often took on odd jobs to help support my family
At Next Step, I pride myself on delivering exceptional craftsmanship while prioritizing customer satisfaction. Additionally, I believe in giving back; we regularly participate in community service projects aimed at helping families in need with home repairs.
As I look toward the future, my goal is not only to expand Next Step but also to mentor young individuals from similar backgrounds who aspire to enter trades like roofing. I want them to know that despite their circumstances like mine, success is achievable through hard work and dedication.
With a degree in accounting & business, holding financial designations as CFP® Certified Financial Planner, AAMS® Accredited Asset Management Specialist. I was a full service auditor & internal controls for Coca-Cola representing the Hawaiian Islands, and over a decade of consulting & helping other business owners build structure and process into their business since November of 2007. With this background, we have built a team dedicated to professionalism and understanding the honor of providing our contracting services to the state of Hawaii. All of our processes and internal controls are pointed toward one ultimate goal of putting the clients needs first and striving to exceed the expectations of our clients and providing the highest level of craftmanship.
Working at Next Step Roofing & Contracting provides me an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the construction industry. As I engage in various tasks, from Clerical, Scheduling, installing shingles to performing repairs, I develop practical skills that are essential for advancement. This experience not only enhances my technical abilities but also builds my confidence in handling tools and equipment safely and effectively. Hi, my name is Guy Villanueva. I’ve been with the Roofers Union for 5 years, worked my way up to Journeyman/Foreman. I enjoyed the climb while in the union, but I craved more. More of a challenge, more opportunities, more goals to reach, more ladders to climb. I met Jose and Eddie and immediately got this “Ceiling-less” attitude & feeling, that I admired. Upon joining the NextStep team, I really got a sense of a “we can do anything” type of feeling. This is the place for me. In February 2020, I was released from prison and was having lunch with Maribel. She offered me a job here at Next Step in the office and to be honest, I was excited and at the same time very nervous, because I’ve never had a job in my life and this would be my first one. All I could think to myself was “Wow, GOD loves me and he wants to give me something better than what I had, all I had to do was leave my old life behind”…I don’t know any other people in my situation that have opportunities like mine, so I know I am truly blessed. I wasn’t going to quit, because that’s not how you grow. You grow when you stick it out and embrace your challenges.
I’ve been working here for over 7 months now and I know so much more than I did when I first started and it just amazes me. I know how to do estimates, write proposals and I learned tons of computer skills. Sometimes we have company barbecues where we all get to hang out with each other and just have fun. Our bosses are always here for us and love helping and watching us grow. We’re a family here and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
